Shipping Wall
Uh oh, this is silly! Apparently my brainrot garden has taken up residency in my library. The fungus infestation is stronger than I thought! Perhaps the spores have escaped containment from the jar? Well, since you're here, you might as well take a look around--careful not to get infected!

AHEM, now that THAT'S out of the way, let me give you a real introduction! This is my shipping wall, a spot dedicated to all the ships that have taken up residence in my brain over the years, along with a smattering of other fandom stuff. It's by no means definitive and will continue to be added upon. What can I say, gardens are meant to be grown. Relationships are riveting!

Notes on Shipping

I play fast and loose with the term "shipping." It's less so about me being a romantic and more so about me wanting to stick bugs in a jar, shake it, and see what happens. It's a tool to examine how characters operate. Which isn't to say I don't like hand holding and smooching, it's just that hand holding and smooching is secondary! As I said above, relationships are riveting. No two are alike, as everybody meets another with a different set of personalities, histories, experiences, and more. Much of the human existence is colored by our connections with others, both the best and worst parts. It's silly to say this when I'm yammering about video game characters or whatever, but it's true!!

For me, what matters the most in a ship is if it makes my neurons off in some way. Because of this, I'm attracted to all sorts of dynamics, including ones that by any standard would be considered toxic, taboo, or """problematic.""" Again, shipping (and storytelling overall) is a way to explore depth available in the human experience, even if it doesn't reflect something I would approve in real life--or even reality at all. This isn't the place to get into arguments regarding pro/anti stuff (if you're online enough in fandom spaces then iykyk) since the whole thing is kinda reductive imo, but that's my standard attitude.

All of these things make me a big multishipper! A multishipper with caveats. My typical trend in fandom is having a handful of ships that I have a stronger affinity for than others. Among these favorites, a couple will wear the OTP crown. I definitely have my NOTPs though, often labeled that way for the crime of being boring (oops) but not always. Think of my shipping style as a hierarchy or tier list lmao.

Because of my preferences I'm game for rarepairs as well! Catch me in my crack house cooking up ships between characters who never talk because of that tasty potential canon neglects. The girlies who get it can come share!!

Many of my ships are M/F, but the actual genders in a ship doesn't matter much to me. HL, GL, BL, it's all about how the actual relationship resonates with me--though I HAVE noticed a number of my M/M ships have a combative undercurrent to them.

On Fanfiction

I adore reading and writing fanfiction so much!! Expanding on canon is a lifelong natural inclination of mine. Even as a 5 year old, I would do stuff like make up stories about the Yoshis living on Yoshi's Island, or get totally immersed in the worlds of Final Fantasy as I sat on the couch watching my brother play. When I got older, 10 or so, the internet led me to realize that Oh, this is a THING, and a ton of other people are doing it, too. I spent many a day clicking through my favorite Harvest Moon fansites, always eager to find a new story to read. I'm still like this now. More often than not, after getting into something new or revisiting something old, I whip out an AO3 tab to peruse the offerings.

Fanfiction is still my favorite way of engaging in fandom. There's so much joy in sharing creations with fellow creators, chatting on and on! Often I find that fanfiction deepens my appreciation for the source material, since writing it requires critical thinking about the characters, setting, themes, and whether or not your interpretation aligns with canon...

Which leads me to my soapbox!

Fanfiction is a legitimate genre that deserves more respect than it receives. Sure, it requires different skills than writing original work, but... if you think about, creation is inherently an act of derivation. Bodies of work are inspired by other bodies of work, with more before them, and so on and so forth, like a nesting doll. Some define fanfiction as something that must exist within the context of modern fandom, written by fans for fans, but I take a broader approach.

In my mind, Wicked is fanfiction, and so are the thousands of spinoffs derived from Jane Austen's novels. Arguably Dante's Divine Comedy is self-insert fanfiction, some of the most scorned in the genre. Many of Shakespeare's plays draw heavily from other sources. Madeline Miller's much lauded novels Song of Achilles or Circe are retellings of myths--in other words, fanfiction. The endless glut of superhero movies? You already know the answer by now. Fanfiction is a type of modern day folklore.

If it weren't for IP law, fanfiction would simply be fiction. I understand why copyright law exists; it serves to protect creators and, speaking as one myself, writers deserve compensation for their work. My concern is centered around the dialogue that surrounds fanfiction and the derision it faces.

Because what is ostensibly on paper a person's fanfiction can get canonized. This happens all the time with DC and Marvel comics. Any Spiderman story that isn't written by Stan Lee himself is technically someone's fanfiction. Same with Star Wars and Star Trek novels. The difference between these examples and someone's work on AO3 is what the copyright holder declares. When you think about it, it's pretty wild that's what separates canon and non-canon. But on whose terms?

In a world that equates commofidication with successful writing, fanfiction is regarded as lesser due to the author's inability to profit from it. However, this is an unfortunate paradigm to operate from, and it shows how arbitrary the line is. Feel free to disagree with me though!

OKAY, soapbox over, ahem. Just because I have a ship listed doesn't mean I'm inspired to write for them, but for a number I have. I'm pretty reluctant to publicly cross my fandom life with my "personal" life here, but if we've chatted before then I might be willing to share my stuff if you're interested!
