Welcome!
My History
I started cosplaying in 2013. Fresh out of high school, I had been interested in trying the hobby for several years but was too intimidated to take the plunge, but that changed. 2013 was also the year where you couldn't get away from Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) if you tried, and one of my best friends from school and I were all in. Plans were made, the date was set; she would be Mikasa, I would be Sasha. Our first cosplays. We spent that autumn piecing together our costumes for a con happening that winter. Haunting mall after mall for blouses and pants and pieces to modify, hemming and hawing at the fabric store, inhaling way too much craft board particles as we cut out prop blades that we deemed "oversized box cutters"... the enthusiasm and excitement we had still makes me smile looking back.
And that's not even talking about the con itself--what a wonderland of creativity! We were SO giddy when we drove up to the convention center and seeing a rainbow of costumes. After meeting up with a few more friends of mine, we were ready. Ready the sights and sounds and utter FUN of it all, to socialize and mingle with other creators who had as much unabashed love for stuff as we did... ready for a new era of embracing ourselves and our interests. Needles to say we were hooked.
While I have been on hiatus from the hobby for the last few years due to big life upheavals, my love for cosplay has never tarnished. There's something so magical in trying on a different persona for the day, in making creative decisions for a character you just adore, in stepping out of your comfort zone. Playing pretend is something that we never fully grow out, and cosplay is the perfect way to do so!
I've had my own up's and down's involving cosplay, my hits and misses within and around it, but I am so grateful for what the hobby has brought me. For the friendships, for the creative outlets, for the skillsets I've acquired, for the life experiences and learning it's offered. All of which are absolutely priceless.
